NanoNeedling vs Microneedling: What’s the Difference?

By Christina M. Casado, L.Ac. | Treehouse Acupuncture & Wellness, Miami

If you’ve been researching collagen-stimulating skin treatments, you’ve probably run into two terms that sound nearly identical but work very differently: NanoNeedling and Microneedling. Both use a device with tiny tips to create micro-channels in the skin. Beyond that, they’re built for different skin types, different goals, and different timelines.

Here’s how to know which one is right for you.

The Core Difference: Depth

The biggest distinction between the two treatments comes down to how deep the tips go.

Microneedling uses 12 needles that penetrate around 0.5mm into the skin, reaching the dermis — the deeper layer where collagen and elastin are produced. This depth is what allows it to treat more stubborn concerns like acne scarring, melasma, and age spots.

NanoNeedling uses 81 microscopic tips that stay within the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer, reaching only about 0.15mm deep. Because it never penetrates the dermis, there’s no disruption to deeper skin structures — making it a meaningfully gentler treatment.

Who Each Treatment Is Best For

Microneedling is generally the better fit if you have:

  • Acne scarring or textural irregularities
  • Melasma or stubborn age spots
  • Fine lines and wrinkles you want to treat more aggressively
  • Skin that tolerates more intensive treatments well

NanoNeedling is generally the better fit if you have:

  • Thin, fragile, or sensitive skin
  • Rosacea-prone or easily reactive skin
  • A compromised skin barrier
  • A preference for frequent, low-downtime maintenance treatments

Downtime & Frequency

This is where the two treatments diverge the most in practice.

Because Microneedling reaches the dermis, it requires more recovery time — redness can last 8–12 hours, and treatments are typically spaced about a month apart to allow the skin to fully regenerate between sessions.

NanoNeedling, working only at the epidermal level, involves minimal downtime. Most patients see only mild, short-lived redness. This allows NanoNeedling to be performed far more frequently — even weekly — making it ideal for consistent, cumulative skin maintenance.

The Shared Advantage: Custom TCM Serums

Both treatments at Treehouse Acupuncture use the same principle to amplify results: the micro-channels created by the device dramatically increase the skin’s ability to absorb topical serums — by up to 3,000%, compared to applying products on intact skin.

We pair both treatments with custom-blended Traditional Chinese Medicine serums, chosen for your specific skin concerns:

  • APSTEM (Apple Stem Cells) — supports facial cell renewal
  • COLLAGENXG+ (Shiitake Mushroom) — builds collagen and elastin
  • REJUV (Gotu Kola) — accelerates skin repair
  • LUMOS BRIGHTEN® (Sea Algae) — targets pigmentation

This is what separates both treatments from standard at-home or spa-grade microneedling: the serums are formulated for your skin, not for trends.

Can You Combine Both?

Yes — and many patients do. A common approach is using Microneedling monthly for deeper structural concerns, with NanoNeedling sessions in between to maintain results, support the skin barrier, and deliver serums consistently without added downtime.

This combined approach is something we often build into a personalized treatment plan based on your skin’s current state and goals.

A Holistic Approach to Skin Health

At Treehouse Acupuncture, every Microneedling and NanoNeedling treatment is performed by a Florida-licensed Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine. Your skin is evaluated within the context of your overall health — circulation, inflammation, hormonal balance, and nervous system tone all influence how your skin responds to treatment.

This means your skincare plan isn’t just about the device. It’s about supporting the internal terrain that determines how well your skin can actually heal.

Which One Should You Book?

If you’re not sure where to start, that’s exactly what a consultation is for. We’ll assess your skin, talk through your goals, and recommend the treatment — or combination of treatments — that fits your skin’s needs.
